CYAAC: Castro youth arts and activist center
Castro District in San Francisco, CA
12 / 10 / 2022
The project is driven by the idea of connection—being part of a larger network. The building creates its own network between interior spaces while also bridging to the larger city context. Program spaces are tethered through both visual and audio means—so that even separated spaces can still connect and build upon what is happening elsewhere. While this is happening internally, the building skin aims to queue into nearby landmarks and focus the viewer at certain key spots. As an activist center, this community focus is integral and allows the building to function as the birthplace for activist ideas and perpetuate their continual development.
